This past month, I had the opportunity to photograph Joyce Manor and PUP at their show at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, Oregon. The opener, Pool Kids, brought a wonderful energy to the start of the show. From a photographer’s point of view, each member brought a unique energy that was very easy to capture. This was my second time seeing Pool Kids, and they truly never cease to impress.

The first band of the double-headliner, Joyce Manor, went in full-speed opening with their song, Heart Tattoo. Though simple in presentation, Joyce Manor created a set where I truly could not look away. The entire crowd shared this feeling, and this created a wonderful, wholesome environment. Joyce Manor’s songs always put a smile on my face; cathartic and energetic, their lyricism always shines through.

PUP finished out the night. Each member of the band was explosive; there were so many sequences of jumps and kicks, and this made for such a fun shoot. The PUP crowd had the most energy. Every few minutes, I could see someone crowd surfing toward the stage or absolutely screaming their heart out. During their set, I truly could not stop moving! This was my first PUP show, and it was awesome to hear songs that I love in concert.

Overall, this show was amazing. I can think of very few shows where the crowd was so enthusiastic. Each band maintained the same amount of energy, and the cohesivity was incredibly refreshing. I definitely look forward to working with PUP and Joyce Manor again!
