Girl and Girl, an alternative punk band, brought their unique energy all the way from Brisbane, Australia, to open for Royel Otis in Portland, Oregon on Monday, May 20th.
As noted by The Current, the band was not only one of TheMusic.com.au’s ‘Top 25 Rising Acts of 2021,’ but they also won the Gold Coast Music Prize in 2022.
Lead singer Kai James brought all the energy with his constant movement and ballet-esque poses.
With Jayden Williams and Fraser Bell on lead guitar and bass and James’ Aunt, Aunty Liss, on the drums, the band delivered an electrifying set to a packed crowd of 600 people.
They played a mix of released music, including their popular single ‘Hello,’ and gave a sneak peek of their upcoming album with performances of songs like ‘Mother’ and ‘Call A Doctor.’
Their single, ‘Hello,’ tells the story of a man struggling with self-destructive thoughts, who, through romanticizing his feelings, stresses the desire to stay in that state due to its familiarity.
Their upbeat sound and emotional lyrics made a lasting impression on the crowd and left me humming their music for the next few days. By the end of their set, they had many new fans and sold much of their merchandise.
Everyone at the venue was extremely friendly, from the staff to the fellow concert-goers. This was confirmed when, being short, I had difficulty seeing the stage until someone invited me to stand in front of them.
Their new album, ‘Call A Doctor,’ is out on May 24th and can and should be streamed by everybody. Who knows, they may be your favorite new band.
